Introduction

This blog is for keeping track of the film studies work I will be doing, this will be for keeping a record of my process and sorting out what I have done and need to do.

Horror Genre

I have decided to worked on the genre Horror, as this is a very interesting genre to look at.

Firstly, I studied six main key areas, these were Setting, Themes, Characters, Props, Narrative/Plot and Style. For most of these, I chose the stereotype scenarios of a horror movie. For setting I chose at night in locations such as graveyards, a forest, a ghost town and a old house. As for themes I chose Revenge, Supernatural and Psychological. For characters, there is a group of teenagers, a bloodthirsty creature and supernatural beings. For props I noticed there are usually things like knifes, skulls, masks and barbed wire.

A narrative for a horror movie would be someone taking revenge on someone who upsetted them in the past. Or teenagers are stalked by a killer for acting badly and not doing the right thing. Styles for a horror movie would consist of music being eerie, orchestral and build up to a crescendo which then suits the scene that it is played in. The mise en scene would consist of costumes of black to represent death and evil for the bad guy, and light colours to represent innocence for the person the bad guy is attacking.

I am Legend

A movie that fits into the genre horror is I am Legend.

Synopsis : People believe that they have found a cure for cancer, but a few months after the cure has been into the human body, it causes a disease similar to rabies until the person mutates into monsters Robert Neville calls Alphas. Robert Neville and his dog are the last non diseased in New York and for all he knows, on earth. He has been trying for 3 years to make a cure for the disease but all efforts have been unsuccessful. He realises that he is immune to both the airborne and contact virus, although his dog is only immune to the airborne. Robert kidnaps an Alpha to try to see if his cure works, but he thinks it doesn't. After falling into a trap, his dog comes into contact with the Alphas and gets infected. He falls into another trap as he tried to get revenge for his dog, but two survivors save him, Anna and her son Ethan.
When they get back to his house, they start talking about a survival colony in Vermont, Robert doesn't believe them and gets angry but is interrupted by an attack from the Alphas. They go down to his laboratory and find that the experiment on the captured Alpha had worked. Robert takes blood from the Alpha and hands it to Anna. Anna and Ethan escape through a door at the back of the laboratory, while Robert stays and kills the Alphas and himself with a hand grenade. Anna and Ethan make it to Vermont to find the colony and give them the antidote.
